I realized a few days after Cyn and Lee's argument that I was lonely.

I wanted to find Briana.

I couldn't focus on that. Instead, I threw myself into working on the house. I didn't have control over whether Briana contacted me, but I did have control over what kind of condition my house was in. Cyn and Lee decided they did want to move into my apartment as a test run for their marriage. I figured it was a good idea, and I couldn't leave my lease without a big fat fee of five hundred dollars for terminating early.

I found molded carpet under a crumbling built-in bookshelf in the living room a few weeks ago. The mold traveled up all the way to the ceiling, so I needed to rip all of that out before someone could take care of the mold the best they could. Decay was normal in a house as old as mine, but if the tenants had taken better care of it, and there hadn't been a break in, the issues wouldn't have been nearly as bad. Now it was mid-March, and most of the mold problem had been eliminated.

“What the hell does 'Shangri La' have to do with purple paint?” Lee asked, staring at the paint samples in front of us.

Bobby scratched his head. “Huh? That isn't even the worst one. What the fuck is Embricardo and how is it a color?”

“Who names this shit?” I asked, just as puzzled as my cousin and my best friend. “Why the hell can't blue just be blue and red just be red?”

“Remind me why you have to paint your house again?” Bobby asked. “Why don't you just slap some kind of wallpaper on it and call it a done day?”

I frowned at him.

“Wallpaper is tacky.”

I couldn't believe I just fucking said that, or that we were having this conversation.

I wish Mom could do this shit.

“It'd still be a lot easier than choosing paint colors... unless you want to go with something like... Chocolate Froth.”

I raised an eyebrow and looked at the paint sample he pointed out to me.

It was fucking white paint.

“Aunt Abs will have his hide, that's why. She said to make it look bright.”

“She isn't going to be living in it so I don't know why it matters,” I said, shaking my head. I grabbed a pile of paint samples. “Whatever. I'm just going to give them to Mom and let her choose.”

“We should've just asked Cyn to come,” Lee said.

“I'm giving you my apartment. I'm not letting Cyn touch these because shit like Chocolate Froth will end up on my walls.”

“Abs isn't any better,” Lee said.

“She'll still ask me before she gets the paint. Cyn will decide to get artistic on it with her friends or some bullshit and I'm not willing to let that happen.”

Lee chuckled under his breath. “Actually if I let anyone paint the apartment, I think I might ask Nikki to.”

That made me freeze in my tracks.

“Nikki? Seriously?”

“The girl has a crazy brain, but she's artistic as hell.
